| The Story of Taylor Souza |
| Kristin Souza took her 3-year-old daughter Taylor to the pediatrician for a
routine ear infection treatment. The doctor noticed bruising on Taylor’s stomach
and immediately sent her in for blood work. The life changing news came back the
following day; Taylor was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Taylor has been through plenty in the past months, more than any 3 year old should ever have to endure. On June 19th of this year, Taylor started her first round of chemotherapy and has been through four rounds since, plus multiple blood draws, lumbar punctures and bone marrow aspirations and staying night after night in the hospital. But with all this Taylor still has the energy to muster her adorable smile. Over the coming months, Taylor will need to undergo several more rounds of chemotherapy and a possible bone marrow transplant operation. Taylor’s parents, Kristin and Sean Souza are both employed full time and have insurance coverage. However, standard protocol for a child of Taylor’s age requires that the mother be present for Taylor’s multiple daily treatments. Kristin will be taking an 8-10 month leave of absence to help Taylor beat leukemia. During this time the family will need assistance in managing their financial commitments so they can dedicate their time and energy where it belongs, caring for Taylor’s twin sister, Savannah and helping Taylor focus on winning her battle against Leukemia. |
